players must surely be seen as the key to why Barcelona 1 didn't manage to
win the league, when considering the squad that they had. Despite
the problems, it was only defeat in the final round that finally took them
out of the running to win. The 2nd team beat the eventual champions
of League 2but lost to the runners-up. In the end, they finished
3rd. It should be noted that the captain pointed out to the
controller that he had used an ineligible player in the Q-F of the cup,
leading to the reversal of the result. The 2nd team managed to reach
the semi-finals of the Plate. |

A strong squad
like this would have liked to have finished in the top half, but
unavailabilities towards the end of the season put pay to any title
challenge; in total they were a player short for half of their
matches. They did reach the cup semi-final where they lost to a
strong RSJ team. |

It was a
"nearly" season in many ways for Barcelona. Having had a
cracking win against RSJ in the cup, they were possibly favourites to win
it, but they succumbed to a Pawn Crackers team that they had beaten in the
league just a month earlier. Unavailability of key players had a big
part to play in their cup exit and their decline in the league. They
finished 4th but did go into the last game of the season knowing that a
win could have clinched them the title, despite defeat in the previous
league match. However, RSJ gained revenge for that opening day cup
defeat as they took the title instead. |

Defeat to the
champions in the opening round must have left them worried of a repeat of
their last time in the Premiership when they went straight back down
again. However 3 wins and a 2 draws in the last 6 rounds
pulled them up the table for a respectable top half finish. |

With 3 wins in
the opening 3 games, they retained their status as odds on favourites to
win promotion, but a wobble in the next 2 rounds opened the door.
However, 2 victories in the final 2 rounds confirmed them as Champions and
promotion back to the Premiership. |

They had a 50%
score after 3 rounds and a draw in round 5 kept them above danger, but
defeat in the last 2 rounds saw them very cruelly slip back down the
Championship on almost the narrowest margin possible. Having
finished completely level with Late Knight Sacrifice, the direct result
between the 2 teams was drawn, but the board county went against Real
Betis and they went down again as they did 2 seasons ago. One feels
they could be favourites to bounce straight back up again. |

The perfect
tonic for last season was immediate promotion and the Championship title -
and that is what was achieved. They were there or there abouts most
of the way despite only drawing in rounds 3 and 4. A finish of 3
straight wins took them back to the top and to the title. |

They had a squad
that could have won it, but it was just one of those things. Players
unavailable at the wrong moments and others not quite finding their form
on key boards left Real Betis struggling all season, although one feels
that with even half of this squad, they should be good another to return
to the top level at the end of next season. |

Real Betis had a
storming start to the season with 4 straight wins, but the middle rounds
cost them the title. They managed to win the last 2 rounds but
finished behind Four Board Forkers on goal difference, but this was their
first prize zone finish. |

David Howes went
for just 4 good players in the hope that they would bring stability and
the title. But yet again, it was results in the 2nd half of the
season that cost the team a prize zone finish. |
