COULSDON JUNIOR CHESS CLUB
This has been running since the mid
1990's and has seen a few strong players pass through at different times.
It runs between 4-30pm and 6-45pm on a Monday afternoon and normally involves a
club championships match and training groups.
We have trainers on hand so that players' games are gone through with them in
the hope that players will learn from their mistakes. We expect players to
record moves so that this can be done.
BEGINNERS
One of our team is primarily there to teach beginners. The club
championship matches normally start on or shortly after 5pm and can last up to
about 6pm. During that time, the beginners are trained one to one or in
small groups (depending on how many beginners we have). Once they are of a
standard that they can play in the main competition (in other words, they know
how the pieces move and how to write moves down), they are moved up.
TRAINING GROUPS
We then have the Intermediate group where we teach fundamental principles of
the game before players move into the advanced group where more advanced issues
of the game are addressed.
MOVING UP
We encourage junior players to move up to the senior club when we think they
are both ready as a player and emotionally. Whilst there is no training in
the senior club, players are moving into a much bigger arena where the sky is
the limit in terms of what they can achieve. The senior club is structured in
such a way that players can get more than their fill of chess by playing in the
internal events, although we always welcome those who also wish to represent the
club by playing home and away matches.
