PLAYING STRENGTH GUIDE/REQUIREMENT FOR EACH COURSE

Basic End Game Techniques Friday
Only
Once you know the basics of how to play and understand the need to checkmate, this course will focus on end game routines to checkmate when you have minimal pieces left on the board.  ECF Accredited Coach Scott Freeman will lead this 1 day course and subject to time, will deal with such end games as:
King & Pawn v King,   King & Queen v King,   King & 2 Rooks v King (the Lawnmower!),   King & Rook v King,   King & 2 Bishops v King,   King, Knight & Bishop v King, King & Queen v King @ Rook. 
This course will run from 10am to 4pm.  For those staying after this time, we will run a mini-tournament (for fun) up until 6pm
"Checkmate Combinations" Mike Healey Tuesday
Only

We'll be looking at checkmating patterns, and spotting checkmate possibilities in the middlegame (and opening). We will be see how long mating combinations can result from being alert to basic checkmate patterns. Finding mate in one is one thing, finding mate in ten is another - but can be just as easy when you know how!  Ideal for those ECF Graded 50-120.

This course will run from 10am to 6pm and will include a 5 round practice tournament.
Learn to Play Tuesday
Only
No requirement other than being keen to learn!  ECF Accredited Coach Scott Freeman will lead this 1 day course, which will take you to a more than adequate level to be able to register for the IOC Level 1 course on the following 2 days.
This course will run from 10am to 4pm.  For those staying after this time, we will run a mini-tournament (for fun) up until 6pm

Level 1
Wed - Thu

Players must know the Names of pieces and how they all move.  Rachel Warner will run this course.

This course will run from 10am to 4pm.  For those staying after this time, we will run a mini-tournament (for fun) up until 6pm
Institute of Chess (IOC)
Level 2
Wed - Fri Players must either (a) have passed level 1 with 65% or more, or (b) be able to demonstrate check, checkmate and the ways of escaping check- and can set a board up correctly every time.  Raff Ibbott will lead this course.
This course will run from 10am to 6pm each day and will include match play practice.
Institute of Chess (IOC)
Level 3
Tue - Fri Must either (a) have passed level 2 with 65% or more, or (b) be able to notate & annotate + demonstrate the correct way to checkmate with K & R v K.  Andrew Couchman & ECF Accredited Coach Daniel Gliddon lead this 4 day course.
This course will run from 10am to 6pm each day and will include match play practice.
Institute of Chess (IOC)
Level 4
Tue - Fri Must either (a) have passed level 3 with 65% or more, or (b) be able to competently checkmate with K & Q v Pawn on the 7th Rank. Paul Bloom will lead this 4 day course.
This course will run from 10am to 6pm each day and will include match play practice.
